A strange but reasonable explanation of why big families tend to be short

People from big family with lots of relatives, sisters and brothers are relatively shorter in stature height. You know why?

Protestants than Catholics, even in a country as small as Holland, there are significant differences in height between people in the north of the Netherlands and the people of the South. The recent study showed a 5 cm or 2 cm height difference between the young men in the northern provinces of the Netherlands – and in the south of the country only 400 kilometers or 250 miles away. Young women show Dutch a 3 cm or 1.5 inch difference. So why should this be?

Machteld Dr. Roeder is a human biologist at the University of Maastricht and auxologist. It proposes that this difference is due less to genetic factors rather than religious:

“The fact is that the north of the Netherlands is a Protestant area – and in the south is a very Catholic. And until recently, Catholics in the south rather larger families … We now know that in general people from larger families rather not so high. Why? Well, firstly, if a mother has many children that they are much older, when the children were born later. In addition to their womb (uterus) are not such a good condition when the first child was born. .. “

Yet another height prediction formula and method

The observation that family members tend to be of similar stature is born out by formulas designed to predict height. One commonly quoted formula uses parental height and gender to predict adult height (in inches) as follows: For men: (height of mother + height of father + 5)/2. For women: (height of mother + height of father – 5)/2. If you know your parents’ heights, see if this formula predicts yours well; for most people, this will accurately predict your height within 2 or 3 inches.

Human height spurts and slumps all through one’s life

From infancy, when average length is 20 inches, to age 2 there is initially rapid growth, then slowing, with about 14 inches in height added. From age 2 to puberty there is slow, steady growth at about 2 inches per year. As one enters puberty, a growth spurt of 3 to 5 inches in a year is common. By ages 40 to 50, height actually may begin slowly to decline, even in healthy adults.

How to predict your child’s adult height at the year of 2?

Genes, nutrition, and overall health have their effects right from the beginning. Rather predictably, we achieve about half of our adult height by age 2. So one way to predict ultimate height is simply to double the height achieved by the second birthday.
